A PET-CT scan combines a CT scan and a PET scan. It gives detailed information about your cancer. A CT scan takes a series of X-rays from your entire body and combines them to create a three-dimensional (3D) picture. A PET scan uses mild radioactive medicine to show areas of your body where cells are more active than usual.
You usually have a PET-CT scan as an outpatient in the radiology department. A radiographer operates the scanner. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Why do I need a PET-CT scan
PET-CT scans are used for many types of cancer. They are generally considered more accurate for detecting cancer than PET or CT scans alone. A PET-CT scan can help:
Detect cancer
Find out how big the cancer is and whether it has spread (the stage of the cancer).
Decide if you can have surgery to remove your cancer
Decide which treatment is best for your cancer
Check if your cancer is back
Planning radiotherapy treatment
Preparing for a PET-CT scan
For most PET-CT scans, you will need to stop eating about 4 to 6 hours beforehand. You can drink water normally during this time. You may be instructed not to do any vigorous exercise for 24 hours before the scan.
After your PET-CT scan
Your radiographer removes the cannula from your arm before you go home.
Then you can eat and drink normally. Drinking plenty of fluids after your scan helps flush the radioactive tracer out of your system
If you are sedated, someone will need to drive you home. You may not be able to drive for the rest of the day because you may feel drowsy.
A radioactive tracer emits very small levels of radiation. It goes through very quickly. For about 6 hours after your scan, keep the amount of time you spend within arm's reach of pregnant women, newborns or young children to a minimum. Your radiographer will advise you on this.
